Former Harvard president and prominent Democratic economist Larry Summers said<\/p>\n\n\n\n
he will scale back public engagements after Congress released seven years of emails showing he remained in contact with Jeffrey Epstein long after Epstein\u2019s 2008 conviction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The emails, disclosed by the House Oversight Committee,<\/p>\n\n\n\n
show Summers communicating with Epstein until July 5, 2019, one day before Epstein\u2019s arrest on federal sex-trafficking charges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The correspondence sparked criticism because it included personal exchanges, including Epstein referring to himself as Summers\u2019 \u201cwing man.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Summers acknowledged the fallout, expressing shame and taking responsibility for what he called \u201cmisguided\u201d decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
While he will step back from public commentary, Summers plans to keep his academic and institutional roles at Harvard, the Center for American Progress, Bloomberg, and OpenAI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
