It measures about 1\u20132 inches long and attaches firmly to branches,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> stems, or fence posts. The hardened outer layer protects the eggs from cold weather, moisture, and predators during winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Praying mantises belong to the order Mantodea and are skilled hunters. They feed on flies, caterpillars, crickets,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> and other insects that can damage plants, making them helpful for gardeners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late summer or fall, the female creates the protective case around her eggs.
