Now, researchers are exploring its role in autism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Link Between Autism and Maternal Microbiota<\/strong><br>A study in&nbsp;<em>The Journal of Immunology<\/em>&nbsp;suggests a mother\u2019s gut microbiota may influence a child\u2019s risk of autism more than the child\u2019s own microbiome. \u201cThe microbiome can shape the developing brain in multiple ways,\u201d said lead researcher John Lukens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Role of IL-17a<\/strong><br>The team focused on IL-17a, an immune molecule tied to inflammation and brain development in the womb. \u201cThe microbiome is really important to the calibration of how the offspring\u2019s immune system is going to respond,\u201d Lukens explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Animal Testing and Next Steps<\/strong><br>Mice exposed to microbiota promoting IL-17a showed autism-like behaviors. Fecal transplants confirmed the gut-brain link.
