At 33, unsure when she\u2019d meet the right partner, she froze 28 eggs as a backup. \u201cI thought it would be a really good insurance policy,\u201d she told&nbsp;<em>PEOPLE<\/em>. Though she hoped she\u2019d never need them, she chose not to freeze more at 39\u2014a decision she later regretted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Obstacles and Heartbreak<\/strong><br>Mintz met her partner, Stephen, at 41, but struggled to conceive due to PCOS. At 42, they turned to her frozen eggs. After a year of testing, they discovered they were both carriers of Wilson disease, delaying the process. The first batch of thawed eggs didn\u2019t survive. \u201cThank God I only thawed half,\u201d she said. The second batch produced just one viable embryo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Difficult Journey<\/strong><br>Determined to carry the baby herself, Mintz underwent surgery for a uterine polyp\u2014but complications, a clotting disorder, and an incompetent cervix made it impossible. \u201cIt felt like fiction,\u201d she said. \u201cLike, how could all of this happen to one person?\u201d Over two years, she went through nine failed egg retrievals. \u201cIt was basically psychological torture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>A Miracle Realized<\/strong><br>At 46, Mintz found a surrogate she called \u201ca unicorn.\u201d The embryo transfer took place in September 2024 while she was on tour. \u201cI threw my arms up in the air, and then Moby threw his arms up\u2026 I think he knew what it meant.\u201d Baby Ophelia was born on May 18, 2025.
