Maxine Waters\u2019 2020 campaign, Citizens for Waters, agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after the Federal Election Commission (FEC) found multiple election law violations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The FEC accused the campaign of \u201cfailing to accurately report receipts and disbursements in calendar year 2020,\u201d \u201cknowingly accepting excessive contributions,\u201d and \u201cmaking prohibited cash disbursements.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Excess Contributions and Cash Disbursements<\/strong><br>Citizens for Waters accepted $19,000 in contributions above the $2,800 limit and made \u201cfour prohibited cash disbursements that were each in excess of $100, totaling $7,000.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The campaign agreed to pay the fine and send its treasurer to a training program, submitting evidence of attendance to the FEC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Campaign Defense<\/strong><br>Attorney Leilani Beaver said the violations were \u201cerrors\u201d that \u201cwere not willful or purposeful.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Waters\u2019 committee said it retained legal counsel and implemented procedures to comply with the law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Past Controversies<\/strong><br>Waters has previously drawn attention for paying her daughter $192,300 for campaign work and for making viral political statements, including targeting Melania Trump and Elon Musk.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>FEC Fine for Campaign ViolationsCalifornia Rep.
