Hodges<\/em>, the ruling that legalized same-sex marriage nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Davis\u2019 attorney, Matthew Staver, said he is optimistic, while William Powell, representing the couple who sued Davis, is \u201cconfident the Supreme Court will likewise agree that Davis\u2019s arguments do not merit further attention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Background<\/strong><br>Davis spent six days in jail for refusing to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples on religious grounds. Her case could challenge federal protections for same-sex marriage nearly a decade after&nbsp;<em>Obergefell<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Arguments<\/strong><br>Staver argued that&nbsp;<em>Obergefell<\/em>&nbsp;was \u201cegregiously wrong,\u201d \u201cdeeply damaging,\u201d and has caused \u201cruinous consequences for religious liberty.\u201d He said it \u201chas no basis in the Constitution\u201d and it is time to reevaluate and overturn it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Expert Opinions<\/strong><br>Legal experts are skeptical.
