She was needed by the girls. And she proved to be our pillar of support during it all,\u201d the family said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Humble and Grounded<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Known for her modesty, Robinson preferred quiet family life over fame. Barack Obama once described her as \u201cthe least pretentious person I know.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She famously asked to do her own laundry in the White House and spent her free time watching TV rather than attending high-profile events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Legacy of Love and Strength<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in Chicago in 1937, Robinson raised Michelle and Craig Robinson with her late husband, Fraser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Michelle said her mother \u201ctaught me how to think for myself, how to use my own voice, and how to understand my own worth.\u201d The family\u2019s statement concluded, \u201cThere was and will be only one Marian Robinson.
