Former President Donald Trump has floated the idea of a $2,000 “tariff dividend,” but the plan remains vague and unofficial.
Trump claims the money would come from years of tariff revenue and
said payments could begin “by the middle of next year, a little bit later than that.”
He added, “We’re going to be issuing dividends,” aimed at “low, moderate and middle incomes.”
No legislation or IRS plan exists, and experts say eligibility is unknown.
One analyst suggested it may follow past relief rules, asking, “Is your income below $75,000 a year as an individual?” but nothing is confirmed.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said, “We will see,” stressing that “we need legislation for that.”
Critics doubt the cost, with Sen. Ron Johnson warning, “Look, we can’t afford it.”
Estimates show the proposal could cost far more than current tariff revenue.
For now, the “tariff dividend” remains only a political promise.
