House Dem Facing 17 Years
A New Jersey congresswoman is facing federal charges after an incident at an ICE detention facility.
Representative LaMonica McIver is accused of assaulting ICE agents during a confrontation outside
the center as she tried to intervene in the arrest of Mayor Ras Baraka.
Prosecutors say McIver interfered with law enforcement,
while her defense argues she was performing lawful congressional oversight and that ICE agents escalated tensions.
Judge Jamel Semper has not ruled on a motion to dismiss but criticized the government’s handling of the case.
He condemned DHS social media posts as “fact-free” and objected to claims that McIver and others “stormed the gate,”
warning such language could bias a jury. McIver’s lawyers call the case politically motivated.
Facing a possible 17-year sentence, she says she remains determined to fight the charges.
