Lawmakers from both parties united

Zohran Mamdani’s election as New York City mayor has fueled a national debate over democratic socialism and its place in U.S.

politics. Attention intensified ahead of his first meeting with Donald Trump,

coinciding with the House passing a bipartisan resolution condemning the “horrors of socialism.”

Though symbolic, its timing highlighted growing ideological tensions.

The resolution passed 285–98, backed by 86 Democrats, including several New York lawmakers.

Supporters framed it as a defense of democratic capitalism,

while critics called it political theater that blurred distinctions between authoritarian regimes and U.S.

policies like public investment and labor protections.

Mamdani dismissed the measure as irrelevant to governing,

focusing instead on affordability, public services, and inequality.

His meeting with Trump reportedly centered on practical issues such as infrastructure and public safety,

underscoring efforts to govern amid sharp political divides.
