How a Day of Earthquake Swarms

Southern California Shaken

A series of earthquakes rippled through Southern California in a single day,

centered near Indio, about 100 miles east of Los Angeles and San Diego.

Residents reported “brief, sharp shakes to longer rolling motions.”

Magnitude and Impact

The sequence began Monday evening with a magnitude 4.9 quake,

followed by more than a dozen smaller tremors causing light to moderate shaking.

“The largest tremor was felt across a broad stretch of Southern California.”

Earthquake Swarm Explained

Seismologists call this an earthquake swarm—“

a sequence where many quakes occur close together in both time and location.”

Aftershocks, including a magnitude 3.8 tremor along the Mission Creek strand,

are normal and may continue for days.

Preparedness Reminder

Though no major damage occurred, the events highlight ongoing risk.

Officials advise residents to “stay informed through reliable updates, review emergency plans,

and make sure homes…are prepared.” Even modest quakes are a reminder to remain ready.
