Kristen Stewart Says She Can No Longer Work
Creative Freedom Under Pressure
Kristen Stewart says the current political climate in the
U.S. has made it hard for her to
“work freely,” criticizing Donald Trump’s proposed
tariffs targeting films made outside the country.
Tariffs and Film Production
Speaking to The Times, Stewart said she filmed her directorial debut
The Chronology of Water in Latvia because
making it in the U.S. would have been “impossible.”
She warned that threats of steep tariffs create instability for filmmakers.
Reaction to Trump’s Claims
“Reality is breaking completely under Trump,”
Stewart said, calling the tariff proposal “terrifying.”
Trump has argued the U.S. film industry is “dying a very fast death”
due to foreign productions, though the tariffs have not yet been implemented.
Looking Beyond the U.S.
Stewart admitted she may not stay in the U.S.
long-term, saying, “I can’t work freely there,”
but added she doesn’t want to leave entirely.
She plans to make films in Europe for American audiences.
