Caribbean Braces as Hurricane Melissa Causes

Hurricane Melissa remains a dangerous Category 3 storm moving toward eastern Cuba after causing “widespread destruction across parts of the Caribbean.”

With “intense winds, heavy rainfall, and a broad impact zone,” it is among the strongest storms to strike the region in recent years.

Jamaica suffered the worst damage, where “violent winds ripped roofs from homes” and flooding left many areas inaccessible.

At least seven deaths have been confirmed across Jamaica, Haiti, and the Dominican Republic, though officials warn the toll “may rise” as assessments continue.

Jamaica declared a national disaster after more than 500,000 residents lost electricity, forcing hospitals and water systems to rely on generators.

Cuba has evacuated over 735,000 people as it braces for impact, with forecasts warning of winds reaching “120 mph” and rainfall up to “25 inches.”

Authorities urge residents to follow evacuation orders, noting that lingering hazards will remain even after the storm passes.
