I Stepped Outside Early One Morning and Found Som
An Unexpected Discovery
One morning, I noticed a strange creature moving slowly across damp soil.
At first, I thought it was an unusual earthworm, but its movement and appearance were very different.
It glided across the surface, with a glossy body and a broad, flat head “shaped almost like a tiny shovel.”
Identifying the Creature
After observing it from a safe distance and checking reliable nature guides, I discovered it was a hammerhead worm, a type of terrestrial flatworm named for its distinctive head.
Unlike earthworms, hammerhead worms are predators that feed on earthworms and other small invertebrates.
Why Caution Matters
I learned that unfamiliar wildlife should not be handled. Some hammerhead worm species produce defensive chemicals, so it is best to keep children and pets away until the animal is identified.
A Lesson From Nature
The encounter showed me how easily appearances can be misleading. What looked like an ordinary garden worm was something completely different.
“Sometimes the best response to the unknown is simple—watch, learn, and let nature continue undisturbed.”
