This morning, I went to the beach with my dog for

The smell of salt and fear hit me at the same time.

One moment, it was just a quiet walk with my dog.

The next, we were staring at something that should not have been there. Translucent. Tangled. Almost alive.

For a while I just stood there, the waves hissing behind me, the wind pushing at my back as if urging me closer.

The thing glistened on the wet sand, its long pale strands splayed out like hair, catching the weak morning light.

It looked fragile and dangerous at the same time, as if one careless touch could change everything.

I kept my dog close, feeling oddly protective of him against something that no longer even moved.

Later, searching online with my photos, the answer appeared: Lion’s Mane Jellyfish. A deep-sea giant, now stranded and dying at my feet.

Knowing its name didn’t make it less unsettling. It made me realize how little I understood about the world just beyond the shoreline.

That morning stopped being a simple walk. It became a quiet reminder that the ocean is never really tame, and that sometimes it leaves its secrets where we can see them.
