Why Maggots Appear

Finding tiny white larvae in a trash can is unpleasant, but there is usually a simple reason. Maggots are young flies, and garbage provides the warmth, moisture, and food they need.

Food scraps, meat, fruits, vegetables, dairy, and food-covered packaging can attract flies, which may quickly lay eggs.

Clean the Trash Can

Remove the affected garbage carefully, tie the bag securely, and take it outside. Keep children and pets away while cleaning.

Empty the bin and wash it thoroughly with warm or hot water and dish soap, paying attention to the bottom, lid, and handles.

Keep It Dry

Rinse the container and let it dry completely before adding a new bag. Moisture can make the environment more attractive to flies.

Prevent Future Problems

Use strong bags, close them tightly, and remove food waste regularly. During hot weather, take garbage outside more often.

Also clean spills and food residue around the bin. Keeping the trash area clean and dry can greatly reduce the chance of maggots returning.
