I Thought Mom Was Hiding Something From Me—Then

Lily’s mother always warned her, “Lily, don’t sit on Grandpa’s lap.”

Lily loved Grandpa George and never understood why her mother was so protective.

One evening, Grandpa invited Lily and her mother to his house. He showed them a small porch with two mattresses and an old telescope.

Lily suddenly remembered a promise she had made at five years old: to stay awake with Grandpa and watch the stars.

Her mother then explained that Grandpa was scheduled for major heart surgery the next morning. That night, they watched a meteor shower together.

As bright streaks crossed the sky, Lily realized her mother wasn’t afraid of Grandpa; she was afraid of losing her father.

The surgery went well, and Grandpa soon returned home. Years later, the telescope remained a symbol of that special night.

Whenever the sky was clear, they watched the stars together, and Grandpa would ask, “Lily, are you staying up with me tonight?”

The memory taught them that the most precious moments are often simple nights spent with loved ones.
