From 90 To 43: Latest Polls Expose
Claim vs. Reality
House Speaker Mike Johnson recently claimed on CNBC that Donald Trump’s approval rating is “90 percent,” saying, “[Trump’s] approval ratings are skyrocketing.” However, a July 17 CNN poll shows only 42% of Americans support Trump, with just 37% agreeing he has set the right goals.
Different Polls, Different Numbers
Other polls tell a similar story: Reuters/IPSOS found 41% support among voters, and The Economist showed 55% disapproval. Rasmussen Reports gave Trump his best rating at 50% support as of July 18.
Where Did 90% Come From?
Johnson’s “90 percent” figure likely comes from Republican support alone. CNN reported “88 percent of Republicans support the president,” which Johnson rounded up, ignoring Democrats’ views.
Historical Context
Trump’s current approval mirrors his first 100 days in office, when 42% approved. This is lower than past presidents like Bill Clinton (66%), Barack Obama (59%), and Ronald Reagan (63%). Nixon’s low 24% is the record low.
