Student Forgot $27 Bitcoin Investment—Years Later

Forgotten $27 Bitcoin Becomes a Fortune
Kristoffer Koch, a Norwegian student, invested $27 in Bitcoin in 2009 after reading a paper by Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. At the time, Koch said, “The sole purchasable items in those days were alpaca socks,” so he forgot about the investment.
Years Later: Shocking Discovery
In 2013, Koch checked his account and was stunned to find it worth $850,000. “Not in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that they would have soared like this,” he told local media.
From Student to Millionaire
After struggling to remember his wallet password, he accessed his Bitcoin and used part of it to buy an apartment in Oslo. He sold one-fifth and kept the rest.
Massive Growth
Today, Koch’s remaining Bitcoin could be worth around $475 million. Reflecting on the journey, he said: “It’s bizarre… we attach a value to something that doesn’t have any in itself.”
