HE CALLED 911 BECAUSE HE WAS HUNGRY

Hungry 911 Call Leads to Compassion
Late one evening, first responders arrived at a home after a silent 911 call from eight-year-old Mateo. Holding a phone, he calmly said, “I’m hungry. We haven’t eaten all day.” Inside, they found a clean but nearly empty home. Mateo’s sister, Sofia, was asleep, and their mother was working late.

Helping, Not Punishing
Paramedic Rosa brought food. Before eating, Mateo set a sandwich aside for Sofia. When he finally took a bite, he showed “visible relief.” Rosa stayed with the kids while an officer found their mother at a nearby diner—frantic after leaving her phone at home.

Support, Not Judgment
Social services offered help, not punishment, giving the mother info on food banks. The night revealed how poverty forces children to grow up fast.

A Lasting Impact
Inspired, Rosa started Midnight Meals to deliver food to families in need. Mateo’s family later welcomed them back—grateful and thriving.
