Former Cal Poly Star Shelby Daniele Dies at 23
Shelby Daniele, a standout Cal Poly track and field athlete, passed away on September 25 at age 23 from a brain aneurysm, according to a Facebook post by Brian Brandenburg.
“Shelby was the driving force behind [my daughter] Eva’s decision to run for the program,” he wrote.
Daniele, remembered for her leadership and spirit, competed for Cal Poly from 2020 to 2024.
She set the school’s indoor 200m record and was a six-time All-Big West honoree and two-time Big West champion.
Cal Poly Athletics paid tribute: “She cared deeply for those around her, had a remarkable heart and was a role model for so many.”
Shelby earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in agriculture and worked at her family’s farm. “Shelby was truly one of a kind and will be missed dearly by everyone in the Cal Poly community.”
