Nasa Tracks Plane-Sized Asteroid Speeding Toward Earth At 47,000 Mph

Asteroid to Pass Earth on July 28
NASA reports that asteroid 2025 OW, about 220 feet wide, will pass Earth at a distance of 390,000 miles—1.6 times farther than the Moon. Despite public concern, NASA says this event is routine.

No Threat, Just Routine
Traveling at 46,908 mph, the asteroid poses no danger. Ian O’Neill of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab stated, “This is very routine. If there was a threat, you would hear from us.”

NASA’s Confidence in Tracking
NASA experts monitor many near-Earth asteroids weekly. Davide Farnocchia said, “Close approaches happen all the time… it’s just part of the fabric of the solar system.” O’Neill added, “We will likely know its path for the next century.”

Looking Ahead: Apophis in 2029
A more exciting event is the 2029 approach of asteroid Apophis, which will pass just 20,000 miles from Earth. NASA confirms it will not impact Earth and plans a spacecraft study during the flyby.
