Minnesota Democrat Convicted Of Burglary
Senator Convicted
Minnesota State Senator Nicole Mitchell resigned after being convicted of first-degree burglary and possessing burglary tools for breaking into her stepmother’s Detroit Lakes home in April 2024.
Conflicting Claims
Mitchell claimed she entered the home for a “welfare check” and to retrieve her late father’s belongings. However, police body-cam footage showed her in dark clothing and a ski mask. During her arrest, she admitted, “I know I did something bad” and “Clearly, I’m not good at this.”
Trial and Evidence
Mitchell confessed to lying to police and trespassing. Officers found laptops, Tupperware, and a flashlight covered in a black sock. Carol Mitchell testified she felt “extremely violated.”
Political Fallout
Mitchell faced bipartisan pressure to resign. Gov. Tim Walz will call a special election. Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy said, “I am relieved to see the end of Senator Mitchell’s trial… I expect her to follow through on that pledge [to resign].”
