American Eagle Stock Surges After Sydney Sweeney Ad
American Eagle’s stock jumped 10% after launching a new ad campaign starring actress Sydney Sweeney, despite social media backlash. The ad’s tagline, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans,” stirred controversy over its genetic wordplay.
In the video, Sweeney says, “Genes are passed down from parents to offspring…” and, “My body’s composition is determined by my genes.” Critics online called the messaging a “racial dog-whistle” and likened it to “modern-day Nazi propaganda.” Others defended the ad, with one user stating, “It doesn’t hurt ANYONE… it’s literally just an advertisement for jeans.”
Despite the outrage, investors responded positively. The company’s market cap rose to over $2 billion after making $400 million in a single day.
Chief Marketing Officer Craig Brommers explained, “To be able to partner with Sweeney on this is saying something… that American Eagle is still placing big bets.”
