RNLI defends picking up Channel migrants after…

RNLI’s Role in Channel Rescues
The RNLI lifeboat crew has vowed not to apologize for helping migrants crossing the Channel. Last year, they responded to 114 boat incidents, rescuing 1,371 people — about 3.7% of those who tried to cross in 2024.

Volunteer Paula Lain said, “When our pager goes, we’re not thinking anything political… We’re actively compassionate.”

Political Criticism
Some politicians have criticized the RNLI’s work. Nigel Farage called the charity a “taxi service” for migrants, accusing them of aiding illegal trafficking gangs. Despite this, the RNLI insists their duty is purely humanitarian.

Rising Crossings and Reactions
More than 24,000 people have crossed the Channel by small boat so far this year, with nearly 37,000 in 2024. US President Donald Trump warned about the “horrible invasion” of Europe, saying, “This immigration is killing Europe.”

About the RNLI
The RNLI is the UK and Ireland’s largest lifeboat service with over 400 lifeboats at 238 stations. Founded in 1824 and based in Poole, Dorset, it relies mainly on legacies and donations for funding.
