What Lurked Under the Field

Rancher Jack’s Awakening

Rancher Jack’s morning began like any other, but everything changed when he found his cornfield dead and strange, smooth eggs scattered in the soil. “His chest tightened.” Though he wanted to destroy them, his daughters stopped him.

Soon, the entire farm felt wrong. Chickens hid, one vanished, and the pigs grew uneasy. “A low hum rolled from the fields, deep and steady, rattling the windows and Jack’s nerves alike.”

As fear grew, Jack noticed more signs. A barn cat returned limping and wild-eyed. His youngest daughter whispered, “the eggs were moving.” He followed her into the dying corn, pulled by dread and something deeper.

By sundown, glowing eggs surrounded him. Each heartbeat-like pulse matched the hum. Jack felt it clearly: “The land was no longer his.” Something ancient had claimed it. The farm wasn’t dying—it was changing. When the eggs opened, Jack knew: a new world had begun.
