Rare Kitten Found in Thailand Turns Out to Be Endangered Wild Cat

A family in Thailand found a tiny kitten alone on the street and quickly realized it wasn’t an ordinary cat. They contacted the Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), which identified the animal as a fishing cat—a rare, wild species listed as Vulnerable by the IUCN.

According to Wikipedia, “the fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) is a medium-sized wild cat of South and Southeast Asia.” WFFT added, “poaching and retribution killing were the major causes for a high Fishing Cat mortality of 84% in Thailand.”

The kitten, just hours old, was named Simba. The mother never returned, so the family cared for him. Simba grew strong and bonded with them.

WFFT experts were surprised the mother abandoned her young, but Simba’s survival offers hope. As the article notes, “It is not just a miracle that Simba was saved, but the survival of his species depends on it.”
