Father Dies After Sand Dune Collapse
A 28-year-old father of four, Kane Watson, died after being buried under a sand dune at Muriwai Beach near Auckland, New Zealand, on August 23.
Tragic Accident
Watson was digging and playing with his children when a dune suddenly collapsed, trapping him headfirst.
He remained buried for 15 minutes as his kids ran for help.
Rescuers freed him and took him to Auckland City Hospital, where he died the next day.
Expert Warning
University of Auckland lecturer Colin Whittaker warned, “If you’ve got a big dune above you… you’ve potentially got something that weighs as much as an elephant collapsing on top of you.”
He added, “It’s incredibly challenging to do” a rescue.
Family Heartbreak
A fundraiser described Watson as a “devoted father” with a baby on the way.
“Most heartbreakingly, his youngest child… will never get to meet him,” wrote family friend Kristalle Tayler.
