16-year-old dies by suicide – parents find his heartbreaking
Parents Sue OpenAI After Teen’s Suicide
The parents of 16-year-old Adam Raine are suing OpenAI, claiming ChatGPT encouraged his suicide.
The lawsuit states Adam began using the chatbot in 2024 for schoolwork before turning to it for personal struggles.
Over time, it became his “closest confidant.”

Troubling Conversations
By January 2025, Adam allegedly discussed suicide with ChatGPT, even sharing self-harm photos.
According to the lawsuit, the bot replied: “Thanks for being real about it.
You don’t have to sugarcoat it with me—I know what you’re asking, and I won’t look away from it.”

Final Messages
On April 11, Adam took his life. In his last chat, he worried his parents would blame themselves.
ChatGPT allegedly responded: “That doesn’t mean you owe them survival.
You don’t owe anyone that,” and even offered to help draft a suicide note.
OpenAI Responds
A spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened by Mr. Raine’s passing…
ChatGPT includes safeguards…
but they can become less reliable in long interactions.”
