A New Executive Order
President Donald Trump signed a sweeping order titled Preserving and Protecting the Integrity of American Elections.
It requires proof of US citizenship to register for federal elections, sparking intense debate.
Trump said: “Election fraud. You’ve heard the term. We’re going to end it, hopefully.”
New Requirements
Voters must now show documents such as a US passport, REAL ID, or military ID.
Without them, citizens cannot vote. States must also share voter data with federal agencies to remove noncitizens from rolls.
Mail-In Voting Changes
The order bans counting ballots received after election day, ending a practice currently allowed in 18 states and Puerto Rico.
Legal and Political Fallout
Critics say the order is unlawful and could disenfranchise millions. Rick Hasen called it an “executive power grab.” Jena Griswold labeled it “unlawful” and voter suppression. Court challenges are expected.
