“He Did It” Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson
Chicago Mayor Blames Red States, Trump for City’s Gun Violence
Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson is facing backlash after claiming that the city’s gun violence crisis
stems from firearms trafficked in from Republican-led states and from federal inaction under former President Donald Trump.
“The vast majority of guns do not come from Chicago,” Johnson said.
“For every gun that the Chicago PD fights to get off the streets, two or three more new guns come into our city.”
He cited lax gun laws in nearby states like Indiana as fueling the problem.
Johnson argued that without stronger national gun policies and efforts to disrupt trafficking routes,
Chicago’s progress will remain limited.
Critics, however, accused the mayor of deflecting blame, saying he’s overlooking local issues such as gang violence and weak enforcement.
His remarks have reignited debate over whether urban gun violence is a federal or local responsibility.
