Strong Earthquake Strikes China–Myanmar Border
A massive 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck the China–Myanmar border early Monday,
shaking homes and cities across Southeast Asia.
Seismologists called it “one of the most forceful quakes the region has endured in recent decades.”
Widespread Destruction
According to the USGS, the quake’s shallow depth of about 10 kilometers intensified its impact.
Buildings swayed from southern China to northern Thailand,
and villages near the epicenter suffered collapsed walls and power outages.
“It felt like a rolling wave,” said one witness, as residents fled into the streets in fear.

Casualties and Chaos
Officials report dozens dead and hundreds injured, with hospitals overwhelmed and
rescue workers racing to find survivors. Landslides and damaged roads have slowed relief efforts.
Rescue Efforts Continue
“Every second counts,” said Dr. Li Wei, a disaster coordinator in Yunnan.
Teams with sniffer dogs and heavy machinery continue searching, as families wait anxiously for news.
