Norman Councilwoman Resigns After Controversial Facebook Comments

Norman City Councilwoman Bree Montoya resigned on September 23

after backlash over comments she made during a heated Facebook argument with a Trump supporter.

In the exchange, she told resident Audra Abbott to “open a vein” and

“put a gun in your mouth and pull the trigger.” Screenshots of the posts quickly spread online.

Apology and Backlash

Montoya later apologized, writing,

“I was immediately disgusted with myself and knew I had crossed an unimaginable line.”

Despite her apology, criticism grew, and calls for her resignation intensified over the summer.

The Resignation

During the council meeting, she said,

“Effective immediately, I am resigning as council member for Ward 3.

Thank you, Ward 3. It’s been an honor to serve.” Applause followed her statement.

Aftermath

Her departure has reignited debate about civility and accountability in local government.

Norman is now accepting applications to fill the vacant seat.
