Trump’s Federal Takeover of D.C. Sparks Debate
President Donald Trump’s decision to federalize Washington, D.C.,
after declaring a “crime emergency” has divided the nation.
While officials note a 26% drop in violent crime since 2024, many residents —
including ABC’s Kyra Phillips, who was recently assaulted — say the city “still feels increasingly unsafe.”
Under federal command, local police now work with the National Guard and
Homeland Security to combat what officials call “a surge in brazen street crimes.”
Early results show mixed progress: violent crime fell 17% and property crime 19%,
but assaults with weapons rose 14% and two homicides were reported.
Federal authorities also expanded immigration operations, with ICE making 300 arrests since August 7.
Critics call the sweep “excessive,” while supporters say it targets “criminal elements.”
As D.C. adapts to federal oversight, citizens remain split between data suggesting progress and daily fears of insecurity.
