Watchdog Says Omar Defaulted On Student
Rep. Ilhan Omar Accused of Defaulting on Student Loans
Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota is under scrutiny after
the American Accountability Foundation (AAF) accused her of “abuse of office and abuse of government loans.”
The watchdog group claims Omar, who earns $174,000 annually,
has defaulted on federally guaranteed student loans worth between $15,001 and $50,000.
AAF President Thomas Jones wrote that “Representative Omar’s default would shift the cost of her
student loans onto the U.S. taxpayer,” calling it “unconscionable.”
He also alleged that Omar used her position to
“bully the Department of Education into not collecting the past-due payments.”
The group has filed a FOIA request for related communications and
urged House Speaker Mike Johnson to impound Omar’s salary to repay her loan.
Omar’s office has not responded.
Critics say the claims raise ethical questions,
given her strong public advocacy for full student debt forgiveness.
