When archivists opened it, they found vellum documents marked with the papal seal of 1484.
The papers included letters between Pope Innocent VIII and an unnamed Dominican mathematician about a strange celestial light seen in 1483.
The Friar called it Signum Revertens — “the Returning Sign” — suggesting the phenomenon matched the biblical star of the Magi.
One letter from the pope read: “If what you observe is true, then the heavens repeat themselves.”
The Friar replied: “Not shift, Holy Father — align.”
Parts of the documents were leaked, sparking global debate and concern within the Vatican.
Astronomers later noted a faint recurring flare in the same region of the sky, informally named SN-Revertens.
