Breaking news as a massive fire erup

A fast-moving fire tore through Pamplona Alta in

San Juan de Miraflores, southern Lima, destroying dozens of homes and displacing hundreds of residents.

Flames spread rapidly through densely packed hillside houses, sending “a column of dark smoke” visible across the city.

Evacuations were chaotic as residents fled carrying children and belongings, while narrow roads and

stairways forced firefighters to battle the blaze largely on foot.

Authorities said the fire was contained by nightfall, though crews continued working to prevent flare-ups.

Several people suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to health centers, and schools and community spaces became temporary shelters.

Investigators pointed to a possible cause: an illegal fireworks or pyrotechnics workshop, where stored materials may have intensified the blaze.

Officials warned such activities “endanger entire communities,” renewing calls for stronger oversight and safer infrastructure.
