The Sandwich Man’s Secret

Paul was a quiet coworker who brought the same plain sandwich every day and endured light teasing without complaint.

After he quit, a colleague cleaning his desk found children’s drawings showing hearts and a man handing out sandwiches.

Curious, the coworker visited the West End Library, where Paul was giving brown paper lunch sacks to children in need.

The sandwiches he packed each morning weren’t just for himself—they were practice for the ones he made for hungry kids.

Paul shared that he grew up in foster care and often went without food. Helping children wasn’t charity; it was healing.

Remembering his foster father’s words, “You don’t need a full plan, kid. Just be one meal ahead of the worst day,” Paul stayed committed to his mission.

After Paul collapsed from exhaustion, his coworker stepped in, and the effort grew into “Sandwich Fridays.” Later, Paul founded a nonprofit called One Meal Ahead.

His story shows that heroism can look ordinary—sometimes it’s simply kindness in action.
