5 Ways to Repair Scratched Glasses

Scratched glasses can be annoying, but most scratches cannot truly be removed — only reduced. DIY methods may lessen their appearance, but they can also damage protective coatings.

A baking soda paste is one option. Mix baking soda with a few drops of distilled water to create a thin paste.

Gently rub it on the scratch for 10–15 seconds, then rinse and dry. This may help light scratches on uncoated lenses. Avoid coated lenses, as it can strip protective layers.

Plain, non-gel toothpaste is another suggestion. Apply a small amount and rub gently for no more than 10 seconds.

However, “most modern toothpastes contain abrasive ingredients that can worsen damage,” so use this only on old or backup glasses.

Car wax or scratch fillers may reduce glare by filling fine marks but won’t remove scratches. Avoid harsh products like metal polish, which can permanently cloud lenses.

If scratches affect your vision, see an optician. Often, replacement lenses are safest. Prevention is best: use microfiber cloths and store glasses in a hard case.
