A deadly flash flood struck Camp Mystic in Kerr County, Texas, early on July 4, killing at least five young girls and leaving 11 others missing.

River Rose Rapidly
Officials said the Guadalupe River surged over 26 feet in just 45 minutes, calling it “one of the worst natural disasters the area has seen in decades.”

Water swept through low-lying cabins just 225 feet from the river, hitting the youngest campers first.

Victims Identified
Eight-year-olds Renee Smajstrla, Sarah Marsh, and Eloise Peck, and nine-year-olds Janie Hunt and Lila Bonner were among those confirmed dead.

The camp’s 70-year-old director, Richard “Dick” Eastland, also died while trying to save the children. He was described as beloved by many at the camp.
