Obama and Bush Defend USAID
Former U.S. Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush released a rare joint video criticizing the dismantling of USAID as an independent agency.
The message, joined by Bono, marked what was described as its “final day” before being absorbed into the State Department by order of Marco Rubio.
Obama called the move a “colossal mistake,” a “travesty,” and a “tragedy,” stressing the agency’s global humanitarian impact.
Bush highlighted its legacy, especially PEPFAR, which has saved millions of lives. Bono offered an emotional tribute, honoring staff and their work in fighting poverty and disease.
Supporters said the change would improve oversight and align aid with national priorities. Critics warned it could weaken U.S. influence and disrupt vital programs.
Founded under President Kennedy, USAID has long led efforts in disaster relief, disease prevention, and poverty reduction.
Despite political divisions, the joint message showed bipartisan agreement that its work “mattered deeply” worldwide.
