A DNA Test Revealed a Family Secret Hidden for Year

After a frightening late-night call, I rushed to the hospital, where my husband, Michael, was holding a newborn girl named Lucy.

Months earlier, we had applied to become emergency foster parents, so I believed we were simply welcoming a baby into our home.

Before we could leave, however, a doctor showed me a DNA report showing a 99.9 percent parent-child match between Lucy and me.

I was fifty-one and completely confused.

Then Eleanor, an elderly woman, arrived crying. She explained that her daughter, Anna, had died giving birth to Lucy.

Before dying, Anna had insisted that her baby be brought to me.

Twenty-two years earlier, I had been told my newborn daughter had died after a medical emergency. I had mourned her ever since.

The truth was devastating: Anna had been my daughter, and her records had been secretly altered.

The DNA report was corrected. I wasn’t Lucy’s mother—I was her grandmother.

At sunrise, Lucy came home with us, wrapped in the pink blanket I had saved for my lost baby.

After twenty-two years, my daughter had finally brought her child home.
