I Stopped Sending My Stepdaughter Birthday Gifts After 13
A large box arrived at Alice’s home with her name written in handwriting she had not seen in thirteen years.
It came from her stepdaughter, Chloe, who wrote, “Maybe Dad will finally tell you why I left. It was never about you, Alice. Look inside.”
Inside were twelve gifts, letters, and cards Chloe had tried to send over the years. Alice was shocked to discover that the letters had been returned to Chloe.
She soon recognized the handwriting on the envelopes as David’s.
David finally confessed that he had lied to both of them. He had told Chloe that Alice found her exhausting and wanted her gone.
He then convinced Alice that Chloe hated her. He intercepted their letters and returned the gifts because he feared they would become close.
The truth was finally exposed when Chloe learned that Alice still called her “my girl.” They exchanged phone numbers and discovered they had both been misled.
Chloe, now thirty, visited Alice that weekend. They hugged and cried, realizing thirteen years had been stolen from them.
Later, they cooked together using the cookbook Alice had once sent her. The locked door between them had finally opened.
