NYPD Officer Killed In Midtown

Tragic Loss of Officer Didarul Islam
Officer Didarul Islam, a 36-year-old NYPD hero, was fatally shot in a Manhattan attack while working a second job in private security. Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way, “was doing what he does best… he was saving lives,” said Mayor Eric Adams. Islam had been an officer since December 2021 and frequently worked in the Bronx precinct. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, “He died as he lived: a hero.”

The Manhattan Shooting
On Monday, a shooter armed with an M4 assault rifle opened fire near a Midtown office building housing NFL and Blackstone offices. The gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, 27, shot Officer Islam in the back, killing him among four other victims before killing himself. Police quickly contained the scene.

Community and Family Remembered Islam
Islam was known as a devoted officer who “loved his job” and worked hard to support his family, according to his brother-in-law. A family friend recalled, “He wanted to leave behind a legacy for his family.” EMS First honored him saying, “Tonight, a hero made the ultimate, selfless sacrifice in the line of duty.”

The Shooter’s Intentions
Authorities believe Tamura targeted the building’s NFL offices. CNN’s law analyst John Miller said, “It appears that he knew it would be his last stand,” intending to “shoot his way through the lobby and make his way to that target.” The attacker was armed with a silenced M4 rifle and dressed in a sport coat.
