$1 Billion Donation Ends Tuition at Albert Einstein College of Medicine
Ruth Gottesman, 93, donated $1 billion to the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, making tuition free for all students forever.
She used Berkshire Hathaway stock she inherited from her late husband, David “Sandy” Gottesman.
Immediate Impact on Students
Current and future students will benefit from this gift. First-year students Samuel Woo and Jade Andrade said they feel “immense relief” and hope free tuition will allow more low-income students to study medicine “without the burden of debt.”
Addressing High Costs and Community Needs
Tuition now costs $63,000 a year, with many graduates owing over $200,000. The college serves one of New York’s poorest areas, making the gift especially significant.
Sustaining Diversity and Excellence
School leaders believe the endowment’s earnings will “sustain the tuition-free program indefinitely,” attracting diverse and motivated students. This gift follows other large donations to medical schools, like $300 million to NYU Grossman.
