Blue State Governor Promises To Shield Texas
Texas Democrats Flee to Block Redistricting
Texas Democrats left the state to block a GOP-led effort to redraw congressional districts, preventing a quorum needed for a special legislative session called by Governor Greg Abbott (R). Abbott aims to gain up to five extra Republican seats with the new map, backed by former President Trump.
Illinois Offers Protection
Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) announced, “We’re going to do everything we can to protect every single one of them” as Texas Democrats sought refuge in Illinois. He criticized Texas leaders, saying, “It’s Ken Paxton who doesn’t follow the law. It’s the leaders of Texas who are attempting not to follow the law.”
Legal Threats and Tensions
Abbott warned Democrats could face arrest and expulsion if they don’t return, calling them cowards. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton tweeted, “Democrats in the Texas House who try and run away like cowards should be found, arrested, and brought back.”
Political Stakes
The standoff highlights deep partisan conflict over redistricting ahead of midterms, with Democrats using every tool to block GOP plans. Abbott stated, “Casting votes is a fundamental responsibility… participation is not optional.”
