Waters Ordered To Pay Massive Fine For Violating
Waters Campaign Fined $68K for Violations
Rep. Maxine Waters’ 2020 campaign, Citizens for Waters, has agreed to pay a $68,000 fine after the FEC found multiple campaign finance violations.
FEC Findings
The FEC said the campaign failed to “accurately report receipts and disbursements,” accepted over-the-limit donations, and made illegal cash payments. Specifically, it took $19,000 in excessive donations and made four cash disbursements totaling $7,000.
Campaign Response
The campaign agreed to pay the fine and “send its treasurer to a Commission-sponsored training program.” Waters’ attorney called the violations “errors” that “were not willful or purposeful.” The campaign said it hired legal counsel and updated procedures.
History of Scrutiny
Waters has faced similar criticism before. In 2023, her campaign paid her daughter $192,300 for campaign work. A past FEC charge from 2018 was dismissed.
