Trans Teachers Can Request Gender-Neutral Title, Says Education Secretary
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said transgender teachers “can make that request” to be called Mx instead of Mr or Mrs if they do not identify as male or female. However, she noted, “it’s not something that they can insist on.”
Phillipson told LBC the government would ensure “people are able to exercise their views on this topic too” and would review “practical guidance that schools need” in light of past legal cases on gender identity.
The prefix Mx is a gender-neutral title. The Equality and Human Rights Commission is preparing updated advice following a Supreme Court ruling that “woman” and “sex” in the Equality Act refer to biological definitions.
Phillipson said guidance would be published after reviewing consultation responses and ensuring alignment with Dr Hilary Cass’s recommendations on gender-questioning children, stressing the need to “take the time to get this right.”
