Urgent Warning: Keep Windows Shut to Stop the Spider from Entering Homes
UK Residents Warned of False Widow Spider
Across the UK, residents are urged to keep windows shut as the venomous False Widow spider reaches peak mating season.
“August is when male spiders become active,” said Dr. Tom Elwood. “They’re searching for a mate and will wander through open windows, vents, or even bathroom drains.”
Why It’s a Concern
Though not lethal, the False Widow’s bite causes wasp-like pain, burning, swelling, and fever. It is one of the few UK spiders known to regularly bite humans, with cases causing intense skin irritation and systemic reactions.
Home Protection Tips
Experts recommend keeping windows closed, sealing gaps, trimming foliage, cleaning regularly, and using peppermint oil. “Spiders are already on the move,” warns Dr. Elwood. “You may not see them, but they’re climbing walls, slipping in through vents, and squeezing through cracks.”
Act Early
Preparation now helps avoid unpleasant encounters, especially as climate change extends mating seasons and indoor sightings rise.
