Tragic Incident
A decade ago, 20-year-old Masqood was killed by a white tiger at Delhi Zoo after crossing a safety barrier. Despite warnings from zoo guards, “Masqood’s curiosity to see the grand jungle cat up close drove him to a perilous situation.”
The Attack
Masqood fell into the tiger’s enclosure and tried to shield himself. Footage shows him “frantically waving his hands in front of his face, attempting to persuade the 200kg tiger to spare his life.” The tiger, Vijay, attacked after several minutes, dragging him to the back of the enclosure. Witnesses reported that Masqood suffered for at least 15 minutes.
Failed Rescue Attempts
Visitors, including Bittu, tried to distract the tiger by throwing stones, but the zoo lacked tranquilizers or communication tools to intervene. Authorities and onlookers were “powerless in this dire situation.”
Aftermath
Masqood’s mother, Ishrat, said, “He left from home at 8 am after I told him to go to work… The next thing we heard was that he was in the hospital.” The death was registered as negligence against unidentified individuals.
